Sailing School
Check Out
In addition to having the proper ASA certifications to use boats in each fleet, members must also attend our free Checkouts on each boat before they can reserve that particular boat.
Schedule & Crew
This is a two-hour course, with up to five students and one instructor aboard.
Prerequisites
Members are already checked out on boats they used during their classes, so everyone is checked out on the Capris after attending Basic Keelboat (ASA 101).
For most of the Bronze Fleet and some of the Silver Fleet, members must have completed Basic Coastal Cruising (ASA 103). (Exceptions due to the complexity or handling characteristics of some boats. For exact requirements by boat, see our Fleet list.)
For most of the remainder of the Silver Fleet boats, members must have completed Bareboat Chartering (ASA 104). (Exceptions due to the complexity or handling characteristics of some boats. For exact requirements by boat, see our Fleet list.)
For Gold Fleet boats, we also require Advanced Docking & Motoring (ASA 118). Members MUST attend our Advanced Docking & Motoring class, we do not accept the 118 cert from other schools.
Description
During a checkout, members have an opportunity to spend 2 free hours with an instructor going over systems specific to the boat becoming familiar with how a particular boat handles under power. We encourage members to take notes during checkouts. Our membership system is designed to make members as self-sufficient as possible when using the boats. Attending checkouts and getting the most out of them will help avoid having to call for boat systems help on your sailing days. We also enjoy pointing out that it is free docking & maneuvering practice with a Tradewinds instructor!
